Travel the world using baseball as your ticket

Travel the world using baseball as your ticket

Most professional baseball players and coaches who think of pro baseball overseas, think of Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan, Korean Baseball Organization, Chinese Professional Baseball League, Latin American leagues, Mexican League, Australian Baseball League, Dutch Major League, Italian Baseball League, or Japanese independent professional leagues.

However, did you know that there are way more amateur/ semi-pro leagues overseas in which you can get paid to play? We have had hundreds of members sign to play or coach in such leagues within each of the following countries:

  1. Argentina
  2. Australia
  3. Austria
  4. Belgium

    Alex Lee in Sydney, Australia

  5. Bulgaria
  6. Canada
  7. China
  8. Croatia
  9. Czech Republic
  10. France
  11. Germany
  12. Great Britain
  13. Hungary
  14. Italy
  15. Netherlands
  16. New Zealand
  17. Poland
  18. Sinapore
  19. Slovakia
  20. Slovenia
  21. South Africa
  22. Spain
  23. Sweden
  24. Switzerland

This list is continuing to grow every year as we extend our network into new countries.

Another interesting fact you may not be aware of is that many leagues do not require any professional experience. In fact the majority of the members at the International Baseball Community website who have signed contracts in these leagues did not have professional experience.

Overseas baseball can be a life changer

Many IBC members have taken full advantage of this and have spent numerous years playing abroad in different countries. Some end up living overseas permanently in countries that provide free healthcare, free college education, and are amongst the lowest crime rates in the world. These countries also do not have a lot of competition on the baseball business front for the entrepreneurial minded. I find it to be a great way to capitalize on your baseball knowledge by carving out niche market for yourself.

Top 10 importing leagues in Europe

Dove Lake, Tasmania

Owen Reid at Dove Lake, Tasmania

Owen Reid is probably the most travelled international baseball player/coach I know. He has travelled pretty much the entire world using baseball as his ticket and now is in a serious relationship with an Australian girl he met while working with the Perth Heat. Check out his blog which details his adventures around the world using baseball as his ticket.

I (David Burns) came to Europe in 1999 to play for the Attnang Athletics in the Austrian Baseball League. Now, nearly 17 years later I still live and play in Austria, which is a country that is ranked 7th in the world for health care, has the 13th best crime rate in the world, and where my kids can go to college for free. I have now travelled to most countries in Europe and have been able to extend my playing career until the age of 42. It has also provided me with the opportunity to build this blog and the International Baseball Community website which helps others take their career overseas.

Ozanich pitching in the Asia Winter Baseball League

Ozanich pitching in the Asia Winter Baseball League

Owen Ozanich has taken full advantage of his dual citizenship with France to play on the French National Team at the World Baseball Classic Qualifier, with Team Europe in Japan, and most recently with Team Europe in Taiwan in the Asian Winter League. Eric Brenk also discovered that he qualified for a German Passport and now lives and plays baseball year round in Germany and with the German National team. More and more players of European descent are now looking into whether they qualify and are surprised when they find out they do. This opens so many more doors and brings in better offers.

Trevor Rooper has been around overseas baseball circles as a coach for over a decade now with stops in the Netherlands, Austria, Australia and now has settled in Sweden where he coaches in the Swedish Elite League. He recently became engaged to a Swedish woman.

Cody Cain, whom I interviewed on IBC Podcast episode #53, took a slightly different route. He originally came to London (U.K.) on business in the mid-90’s but this Lewis & Clark graduate could not resist getting involved in baseball while living and working overseas. The demand for knowledgeable baseball people caused this entrepreneurial minded pitcher to start his own baseball academy in Great Britain. Business for Cody is growing rapidly, to the point where he is having difficulty finding enough quality coaches to keep up with the demand.

How to take your career overseas

Justin “Boomer” Prinstein took his career overseas to Belgium in the mid-1990’s and spent the good part of 5 years playing around Europe, Australia and Israel. This led to an opportunity as an International Scout for the Baltimore Orioles while playing in Europe and today he is a pro scout for Major League Baseball. On the side Boomer runs his own company (Boomer Baseball International) helping young European baseball players reach their college baseball dreams. You can here more on Boomer’s story in a three part IBC podcast interview (58, 59, 60).

Overseas for aspiring professional baseball coaches and administrators

Clayton enjoying Christmas in Australia

Clayton enjoying Christmas in Australia

Overseas has also been a great route for those who desire to launch a career in coaching and are finding the U.S. as way too competitive of a market. The following coaches followed Trevor Rooper’s example in recent years.

Clayton Carson took his coaching career to Europe in 2014 and never looked back. He got his start in Austria and spent two winters in Australia and the 2015 summer in Switzerland. He coached in his first professional league in Italy for the summer of 2016, took the winter off and now is in Sweden coaching.

Ryan Flynn first got his foot in the administrative side of baseball with MLB international in London while there on a business trip and observing a flyer on a pole. He has since take his career to Guam before landing in New Zealand as the CEO of baseball operations for the entire country. He has now settled there with his family and is wrapping up his 7th year at the helm while growing the sport tremendously.

Ron Frazier, a former high school and college coach took his career to Croatia in the summer of 2014 (after approval from his wife) to coach Nada Split while living right on the Adriatic seashore. In 2015 he signed on with Technika Brno of the Czech Republic and wrapped up his overseas career in Germany in 2016 with the Solingen Alligators.

Kris Richards is a former minor league infielder with the Orioles and decided to switch to coaching after an injury cut his career short. He got his first start as a coach via the overseas route and led the Kotlarka Praha baseball club to their first ever Czech championship in 2015. He re-signed with the reigning champs for the 2016 season before heading to Australia to play and coach for the 2016-2017 winter. He is now coaching in New Zealand.

Overseas provides opportunities for players of many different backgrounds.

That is the beauty of it. Overseas provides opportunities for players and coaches from a wide spectrum of experience and baseball backgrounds. In addition, there have been many players who have been overlooked or injured who have used the lower levels of European baseball to get their foot in the door, proven their worth, and moved up the ranks.

Alex Lee was undrafted, out of a NCAA D1 program. He played at the lowest level in Europe you can imagine, Austrian division 3, and has since gone on to the Czech Elite League (one of Europe’s best leagues) and two winters playing competitive baseball in Australia.

Menlo College (NAIA) grad Jimmy Jensen spent a year in the Pecos league before looking overseas. He got a start in the Austrian Baseball League in 2015 before back to back winters winter in Australia with a summer in France playing ball in between. He is currently in Germany for the 2017 summer with the Stuttgart Reds. In both leagues he has had tremendous success and is now getting attention across all of Europe for 2016 and from pro leagues in both North America and in Europe.

Former AAA pitcher Rayner Oliveros decided after years of pro baseball in the U.S. that he would like to see other parts of the world and signed up for a membership at the International Baseball Community. He found a job pitching in France with the Chartres French Cubs for the 2015 season and enjoyed his time so much he returned for a second season in 2016.

Imports of clubs overseas also come from many different baseball nations. The large majority of imports in Europe are American or Venezuelan, however there are a number of other nations represented. We have also seen Canadians, Australians, Latin Americans, Koreans, Japanese, New Zealanders, and Europeans take their career outside their own borders using IBC.

Sam Siddall is a utility player/coach and is one of numerous Canadians on the International Baseball Community website who played overseas since 2015, two seasons of which he played in Europe and three in Australia. You can hear more about Sam’s story in this podcast interview

Scotty Mulhearn is a veteran professional Australian Baseball player who took his career overseas almost a decade ago to Sweden and has since played in Japan and Austria before settling in the Czech Republic for the past three seasons.

Mitch Stephan

Mitch Stephan is the first German IBC member to jumpstart a professional career overseas when he signed on with a club in Perth, Australia for the winter of 2015-2016. Mitch and his girlfriend are enjoying their days off by sandboarding in Australia.

Paluch Przemysław is a Polish catcher who has been crossing the border to the Czech Republic for many years to play in the better Czech Extraliga for the Ostrava Arrows. He took his career to Germany in 2016 and now 2017.

Connar O’Gorman is a New Zealand born catcher who took his game over to Germany in 2015 and is currently the starting catcher for the Adelaide Bite in the Australian Baseball League. He also played in the Shikoku Island League in Japan last year.

Austrians Ben Salzmann and Mo Hackl have both used our service to play outside of their country. Ben played in Australia for the 2016-2017 season and Mo is currently playing in Belgium for the 2017 summer.

These are just a few of our international players who have tested themselves abroad and as you can see there are plenty of opportunities for talented players and coaches from a variety of different backgrounds in the game. From current professionals to aspiring professionals. Players fresh out of college to former MLB players. They come from many different nations and from many different baseball cultures.

Overseas is about the experience, getting back to your baseball roots

I thought maybe I could find a way to get the passion back for the game. So I thought why not try to go play overseas somewhere.  – Jeff McKenzie, French Elite League MVP 2015

Eiffel Tower

Jeff McKenzie in front of the Eiffel Tower

Much like playing pro baseball in the U.S., the pay overseas is not great. However the experience itself provides a richness that cannot be counted in dollars and cents. Overseas is the place for players who like to travel and are enthusiastic to share their baseball knowledge. It is not a place for players that are looking to make money or aspire to make it to the MLB. In fact, the more a player is open to playing at a level lower than they are used to, the more overseas options there are. To get an idea of the various levels of play and how they compare to baseball in the U.S., I created this matrix as a quick summary.

Some players who have fallen victim to the pressures of pro baseball in the U.S. have used overseas as a way to rejuvenate their love of the game. Most that come overseas find the experience to be life changing and a way to grow culturally and as a person. They find that the local players overseas, although often not as talented, are passionate about the game and play because they love it and with little worries about their career or status as a ball player. Many are students or family men who have full time jobs and still manage to make it out to practice three days a week and for doubleheaders on the weekends. The game is becoming more and more global, and it is your turn to experience  baseball overseas and to do your part in growing the game.

"After graduating from college in 2014, the International Baseball Community helped me find a club to play for in Australia. The club also provided a host family and decent paying job. Afterwards, the IBC got me a contract to play in the French First Division. I was contacted by four different teams from around the world offering me a spot to play on their team. Right now I’m playing in Austria and it has been amazing.
