Makinna Akers: 2017 First Team All-Conference NCAA I Starting Pitcher with 5 years coaching experience
Makinna Akers is a First Team All-Conference starting pitcher out of Boston University (NCAA I) who during her senior year in 2017 posted a 2.08 era over 16 start while throwing 11 complete games and 4 shutouts.
Makinna’s career at BU started with very similar numbers as a freshmen, however it is also her toughness and dedication to the team that she will be equally remembered for that year after returning to competition only a week after receiving a line drive to the face that required surgery.
“I took a ball to the face as a pitcher which knocked out all my front teeth and broke my maxilla. I picked up my teeth, walked off the field and then proceeded with a four-hour surgery. I returned to the field the next day to watch my teammates compete against our biggest rivals and returned to play a week later with a facemask, against the doctor’s recommendation to stop playing.”
Makinna came back from her injury with a vengeance as she led her team to regionals that year, knocking out Louisville Kentucky and facing powerhouses Arizona State and LSU.
Makinna’s pitching repertoire includes a screw, rise, drop curve, curve at about 65 mph and a change-up at 55mph. She is also an experienced coach and is currently the pitching and assistant coach at George Fox University. She is happy to handle any coaching responsibilities overseas in addition to playing.
While at her graduation Makinna received a message from the Neunkirchen Nightmares of the German Bundesliga North asking her to come play.
“I was absolutely thrilled and committed to coming over the moment after graduation. I loved every second as an import player and I made some amazing friends. I can only hope that this year will be just as amazing if I get the opportunity to play again.”
A two-way player growing up, Makinna quickly jumped back into that role with the Nightmares, posting a .348 batting average and OBP of .423 in the short season. Makinna’s era of 4.88 is bloated due to a rough first outing which saw her team commit 6 errors behind her against a top team which featured two big American bats in their lineup. Over the course of her short stay, Makinna managed to help her last place Nightmares (5-19) to improve, highlighted by a two game winning streak in the final two games of the season. In these final two games Makinna threw two complete games while surrendering only 2 earned runs en route to 10-2 romp over the best team in the league as well as a 7-0 shutout of the third place team.
Any club interested in a two-way player with leadership qualities is encouraged to reach out to Makinna with any expressions of interest.

“Makinna is a force on the mound. Her explosiveness and sharp movement make her difficult to hit. She has a great game sense and understands her skill sets, which helps her approach every batter. She has an awesome off-speed that mixes brilliantly with her drop ball. Makinna wants the ball and competes every pitch to give you her absolute best.”
