Parker Swindell: Left-handed hitting SS/RHP with Italian passport. Will be in Italy January 2018
Highly recruited out of high school as a shortstop, Parker Swindell signed on with San Mateo Junior College as a two-way player where he eventually committed full time to pitching after realizing that is where he was needed the most. He then signed on with the University of North Carolina, Asheville (NCAA Division 1, Big South Conference) on a scholarship for his junior and senior year.
Unfortunately he ran into arm problems early and had to red shirt his first year at UNCA. Luckily his coaches allowed him to work out in the infield during practice and he continued to work on his hitting on the side. Parker was back to full health in 2015 for his junior year where he was used in relief and posted a 5.82 era. In his senior year he was used both as a starter and as a reliever.
In the summer of 2017, while abroad living in Valencia, Spain, he decided to walk-on with the Valencia Astros since he was there for the summer anyway. Unfortunately the import spots of the Astros were full so Parker spent most of his time with the second team and practicing.
His experience this summer made Parker realize the baseball opportunities in Europe, leading him to apply for an Italian passport, (Italian grandparents). He expects his passport to arrive in February and is looking for baseball opportunities for 2018 as a middle infielder who can pitch in relief. Parker is also very comfortable playing all other infield and outfield positions, all of which he has played at one point or another.
He encourages any club interested in a left-handed hitting two-way utility player who holds an EU passport (expected in February) to reach out to him with any questions or expressions of interest.
