Sammy Hackl – Power hitting catcher who hits for average. U23 World championship experience
Signed for the 2017-2018 winter to play overseas.
Samuel Hackl is a 21 year-old catcher from Austria who has been facing professional pitching since the age of 16 while playing in the Austrian first division, a league where each team annually imports (mostly American) college graduates or former professional pitchers.
At a young age Sammy was projected as one of the top all-time talents to come out of Austria and now at the age of 21 he is making big strides in his game and is ready to test himself outside of his native Austria.
Sammy spent 2014 playing high school baseball in Colorado to further test himself and develop his skills and again in 2015 he played in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues, the Czech Extraliga which features minor league level import pitching. Sammy did not produce the numbers he was hoping for at the time but gained a ton of valuable experience that is paying off today.
In 2016, as a member of the Austrian U23 National Team, Sammy played in the U23 World Championships in Mexico where he played against the top talent from the likes of Japan and Venezuela and hit .375 (link to stats). This experience again added to his development and confidence and today Sammy is hitting his stride. He continues to play in numerous international competitions as a member of the U23 Austrian National Team and will be in Serbia this summer for the European Championships.
In late July 2017, Sammy led the Austrian National Team to a European B-Pool Championship victory while winning the tournament MVP after hitting .316 with four home runs and a slugging % of 1.053 (stats).
Currently Sammy is playing in the Baseball League Austria and leads his first place team, the Vienna Metrostars in nearly every offensive category summarized in a .390 / .495 / .688 slashline. In a league full with a number of import professional players, Sammy is amongst league leaders in numerous offensive categories (link).
Defensively Sammy is one of the top catchers in the league with a pop time of 1.95 – 2.00 and a plus arm.
This demo video illustrates well his skill level.
Any club in need of a catcher with a big bat is encouraged to reach out to Sammy with any questions.
