Sydney Underhill – Four year NCAA I left-handed starting pitcher with college coaching experience

Sydney Underhill was a four year, left-handed, starting pitcher at Monmouth University (NCAA I) who over the course of her career amassed 107 starts resulting in 46 complete games and 8 of which were shutouts. Her best season was in her junior year in 2016 when she held down an era of 2.33 over 171.1 innings of work, finishing with an 18-13 record including 2 shutouts.

Sydney is all over the Monmouth record books and has been recognized by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference on a number of occasions highlighted by her naming to the All-Conference 1st Team in her junior season and All-Conference Pre-Season Team in her sophomore season. She was also named the MAAC Pitcher of the Week three times over the course of her college career.

Her freshman season was was a record breaking season for Sydney that she dedicated to a close friend and former teammate of hers who passed away and would have been in her senior season that year. Sydney was one of only two pitchers on the pitching staff that season and at times was the only pitcher, thus leading to her logging a lot of innings and in turn the recognition as the only freshman pitcher to appear in every game in all of NCAA I softball in 2014. That season she set numerous school records and was named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team.

Sydney describes her pitching abilities as throwing a drop curve, drop, screw, change up, rise, and off-speed in addition to her low 60’s fastball.

At the plate she also has experience and describes herself as a slap hitter and can play first base.

Sydney is also an experienced coach who has been in the profession since 2013 as a private pitching instructor and most recently in 2017 as a pitching coach and second assistant with DeSales University (NCAA III). Coaching is her passion and she is happy to help out wherever she is needed within a program overseas.

Reasons why Sydney wants to take her career overseas:

“My senior season at Monmouth did not pan out as anticipated due to various factors. I want to take my career overseas not only because I want to put a more positive light on the latter half of my career but also to honor all of the dedication and sacrifices my dad has made for the sake of my career. He has always wanted to see me play beyond college and this is the perfect opportunity to do what I love and also honor all that he has done for me in regards to softball. I am motivated, excited, adventurous, and ready to get back to competing. I love the sport of softball and also love to travel and to learn about other cultures. Taking my career overseas will allow me to continue playing the sport that means so much to me while also getting a once in a lifetime chance to see other parts of the world.”

Any club in need of a quality starting pitcher who can contribute both as a coach and to the offense is encouraged to reach out to Sydney with any expressions of interest.

“Thank you for reaching out about Sydney! As Sydney’s pitching coach for the past three years, I am excited and proud to declare Sydney Underhill as an established and reliable pitcher. Over the time that we worked together, I recognized Sydney’s ability to push herself and strive to improve every practice. I provide physically and mentally challenging workouts to increase pitchers’ stamina and command while also encouraging overall player development. Sydney took to my style immediately and really flourished her last two seasons at Monmouth University. She is a true team player and understands the leadership role of the pitcher. She continues to do workouts with me on a weekly basis to prepare for the potential of overseas play!
Sydney’s fastball is 60 mph. She has an EXCELLENT drop curve and a stunning change up. Her command of the riseball adds another element to keep hitters off balance. Sydney makes good use of her off-speed drop, screwball, backdoor drop curve. The mix of pitches that can be created here is endless and Sydney has the knowledge to keep any hitter that steps to the plate on her toes. I am honored to recommend Sydney as a player and I know she will continue to strive for greatness in continuing her pitching career overseas.”

“I worked with Sydney for three season while at Monmouth University. She  is a very good lefty drop ball pitcher with good spin on the ball. She also throws a low change and did a great job keeping the ball down on hitters. Her drop/curve and curve kept the ball in on the hitters hands. She has good control, can hit her spots and is a very hard worker. Her fast ball even though we didn’t use it much was 60-62. Anyone would be happy to work with Sydney. She is a very strong fielding pitcher who can throw the ball overhand and hard. She is also a very good base runner!”
