Takuya Funada – Speedy shortstop with pop and good coaching experience
Takuya Funada is a speedy, middle infielder from Japan who has been playing the game his whole life and now wants to play and teach the game of baseball around the globe. In 2017 he was a player-coach for the Barons Wroclaw, a first division team in Poland and is looking to play and coach at a similar level in Europe and Australia. In Poland he was utilized mostly at shortstop, however Takuya is also very comfortable in the outfield and can eat up some innings in relief if needed. He finished the season in Poland hitting 0.490 with 2 home runs and 19 stolen bases and held down an era of 1.59.
He hits from the left side for average with pop and has great speed on the base paths (50 m in 5.8 seconds), therefore can be utilized as a leadoff hitter or as a middle of the order bat.
Coaching is Takuya’s passion and therefore he is happy to help out where needed. For five years Takuya owned and operated a private baseball school in Japan, coaching youth aged 9 to 15. In Poland he also assumed the role as youth coach for the Baron’s entire youth program, in addition to playing and coaching the men’s team.
Takuya on why he wants to take his baseball career overseas:
“I wanted to share my fascination of baseball with many people, so I opened my own baseball school and started coaching children. But there are still many countries where baseball isn’t as popular and well known as in Japan. I want to travel the world play and teach baseball in these countries in order to spread the joy of baseball.”
Takuya would be a great fit for a lower division club in need of a shortstop / relief pitcher who can also coach all ages. Any club interested in Takuya is encouraged to reach out to him with any questions or to arrange an interview.

“Takuya Funada is a young open-minded person. As a player he helped us a lot during the regular season. He was one of the best hitter in our team (AVG 0.364). His biggest advantage for sure is his quickness and really good base running (14 stolen bases). His quickness can also be seen when he play as a shortstop because he is able to catch lots of balls but there were also games with some errors of course. He was not our main pitcher but he managed very well in this role.Takuya definitely is not a coach. Unfortunately his level of English language is pretty low, in our opinion. And that was the main reason why we couldn’t use all his knowledge and cooperate with him on satisfying level. After several months he lost his involvement and came back home earlier, than he supposed to. Anyway, he’s a young good baseball player and we wish him best luck in further career.”
